Örnsköldsvik

Before arriving in Örnsköldsvik from the south, one of the highlights is crossing the majestic High Coast Bridge, a majestic landmark with sweeping views of this UNESCO-listed landscape. Stop in the Docksta area to explore Norrfällsviken, a charming fishing village with coastal trails and red cottages.  We really recommend to take a trip by boat to Ulvön, the “Pearl of the High Coast”. Friluftsbyn near Skuleberget is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, it combines adventure with cozy amenities and stunning views.

Örnsköldsvik to Umeå

Leaving the High Coast Region and driving North along the E4, take a 20 min detour and stay over at Skeppsmalen, a charming fishing village famed for its surströmming (fermented herring) museum and salteries producing iconic brands like Röda Ulven. Near Nordmaling, explore Olofsfors Bruk (1762), one of Sweden’s best-preserved industrial sites, with museums, guided tours, a children’s trail, and cozy cafés.

Umeå to Skellefteå

Umeå is the largest City on this trip and hosts the Västerbotten Museum full of regional history, Sámi culture, and traditional Swedish life, the Norrlandsoperan, a vibrant cultural hub for opera, music, and theater performances, as well as some great restaurants.

Once back on the road, take a boat trip over to Holmön and get really close to Finland, or marvel at the quirky World’s Largest Cheese Slicer in Ånäset. A visit to Bjuröklubb Lighthouse rewards you with coastal views and hiking trails.

Skellefteå to Piteå

On the road between Skellefteå and Piteå, along the E4 highway, you will pass Byske Havsbad Camping and Jävre Fishing Camp. Both offering scenic places to put up camp for a night or two. Arriving in Piteå there are a lot of options both for stopping at campings and camping in the wild.

Piteå to Storforsen

Follow the Piteå River north. Just after the village Bredsel you will arrive at Storforsen,  one of the most impressive natural attractions in Sweden, known for being one of Europe’s largest unregulated rapids. It’s a great playgound and recreational area for locals and tourists alike, perfect to spend some time hiking, sunbathing and outdoor cooking!

A 1 hour detour allows you to pass by Harads and see the Treehotel, architect-designed treehouse rooms suspended in a forest, and Arctic Bath, a unique floating spa and hotel.
